Information and treatment
Suar wood, also known as rain tree or monkeypod wood, originates from the Albizia Saman tree, which is native to Southeast Asia and parts of South America. Renowned for its striking natural grain and warm tones, suar wood offers a unique, organic look that is highly valued in furniture making.
Teak wood comes predominantly from Southeast Asia, particularly from countries like Indonesia and Myanmar. Its natural oils and dense composition make teak highly resistant to weather, insects, and fungi, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.
Both suar and teak wood are grown in regions with a high average humidity compared to Belgium. This difference in climate means the wood must acclimate to the lower humidity levels in Belgium to prevent cracking or warping. Proper drying and careful handling during this transition are essential to ensure long-term durability.
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and beauty of your wooden furniture. Here are our recommendations for caring for both indoor and outdoor pieces:
Indoor Furniture (Suar Wood Poles)
To maintain the condition of indoor suar wood poles, we recommend regularly applying a high-quality worktop oil. This oil nourishes the wood, keeping it moisturized and reducing the risk of cracking due to indoor heating or low humidity levels. Additionally, it creates a protective layer, making the wood easier to clean and more resistant to stains.
- How often? Apply worktop oil every 6–12 months, depending on how dry the wood feels. If the surface starts to look dull or feels dry to the touch, it’s time for another application.
- Why? Regular oiling enhances the wood’s natural grain, protects it from drying out, and ensures it remains easy to wipe clean, maintaining its rich, natural appearance.
Outdoor Furniture (Teak Wood)
For outdoor teak furniture, it’s essential to protect it from weather exposure. Use a specialized teak oil or outdoor wood stain to shield the wood from UV rays, moisture, and other environmental factors.
- How often? Treat the wood with oil or stain every 6 months or as needed, especially before and after the harsher seasons, such as winter or summer.
- Why? Outdoor treatments prevent the wood from drying, fading, or developing mold, ensuring its durability and resistance to weathering over time.

Wood is a natural, living material that responds to changes in its environment. Suar wood, like many other wood types, can develop cracks due to fluctuations in humidity and temperature.
- Why does this happen? When the surrounding air becomes too dry, the wood loses moisture, causing it to shrink. This shrinkage can lead to cracking. Conversely, in high-humidity conditions, wood can absorb moisture, potentially causing it to expand or warp.
- Can it be prevented? While cracks are a natural characteristic of wood and cannot be entirely avoided, proper care can minimize the risk. Regularly treating the wood with oil helps to maintain its moisture balance and reduce the likelihood of cracking.
Cracks are not a flaw but part of the charm and authenticity of real wood. They highlight its unique, organic nature and remind us that wood is a living material that breathes and adapts to its surroundings.
Cracks in wood are a natural feature and part of its charm and authenticity. Wood is a living, breathing material, which means it reacts to its environment. In Indonesia, where our wood originates, the humidity is very high. When exposed to a lower humidity environment, such as in Belgium, the wood adjusts, which can sometimes cause cracks.
In particular, the thick bases can take up to 3 years to fully dry. To minimize the risk of cracks, we recommend maintaining a humidity level of at least 60% in your home. This helps the wood adapt gradually to its new environment.
Are cracks covered by warranty?
Cracks in wood are not covered by warranty. This is because it is a natural effect inherent in wood as a material. However, we are at your service for free fillings in our workshop in Westerlo.
Cracks in wood can be repaired with a few simple steps using natural-colored wood paste and sandpaper. For deeper cracks, the process requires layering the wood paste for optimal results. Follow this step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Prepare the Crack
- Clean the crack to remove any dust or debris. This ensures the wood paste adheres properly.
Step 2: Apply Wood Paste
- For shallow cracks, fill the crack with wood paste in one application. Use a putty knife to press the paste firmly into the crack and smooth out any excess.
- For deep cracks, apply the wood paste in thin layers. Let each layer dry completely before applying the next one. This gradual process ensures the paste bonds securely and prevents shrinking or cracking later.
Step 3: Let It Dry
- Allow the final layer of paste to dry thoroughly. Refer to the product’s instructions for the recommended drying time.
Step 4: Sand the Surface
- Once the paste is dry, use sandpaper with a grit of 180–240. Start with 180 grit to remove excess paste and finish with 240 grit for a smooth, even surface.
- Always sand in the direction of the wood grain for the best finish.
Optional: Apply a Finish
- To restore the wood’s natural look and protect the repaired area, apply a suitable oil, varnish, or finish.

Since the base of the cat tree has not yet been treated with oil , it is best to proceed as follows:
- Light sanding: Use sandpaper with a fine grit (e.g. 180-240 grit) to gently sand away the stains. Always sand with the grain to avoid damage.
- Cleaning: Dust the base with a slightly damp microfiber cloth.
- Treatment with worktop oil: Apply a thin coat of food-safe worktop oil with a slightly damp microfiber cloth. This ensures that the oil is evenly distributed and soaks deep into the wood. Then let the oil soak in well and dry completely (about 24 hours).
After this treatment, the wood is washable, making future cleaning easier.
Wood is a beautiful, natural material that lives and adapts to its environment. Teak, known for its durability and weather resistance, is ideal for outdoor use. Yet no material is completely maintenance-free when exposed to the elements year in, year out. A common phenomenon with wood left outdoors is green deposits. But what causes this and what can you do about it?
Why does green staining occur?
Green scale, also known as algae growth, is caused by a combination of moisture, shade and stagnant air. This natural process happens not only to wood, but also to stone, tiles and other outdoor materials. Especially in wet and humid seasons, such as autumn and winter, algae can develop rapidly. However, this does not mean that the wood is of poor quality – on the contrary, even the best woods, such as teak, can suffer from this.
Is green deposit damage to teak?
No, green stains do not affect the quality and strength of teak. Teak is one of the most weather-resistant woods and remains strong even after prolonged exposure to rain and sun. The green coating is purely an aesthetic effect and can easily be removed with proper maintenance techniques.
Who is responsible for maintenance?
As a retailer, we provide a strong and durable product: teak that can withstand various weather conditions. However, as with any outdoor furniture, regular maintenance is the owner’s responsibility. We cannot guarantee algae growth, just as no manufacturer can with wooden garden furniture. Without proper maintenance, any outdoor product will show signs of nature sooner or later.
How to prevent and remove green deposits?
Fortunately, green deposits are easy to remove and prevent with a few simple steps:
- Regular cleaning: Clean your scratching post or garden furniture at least a few times a year with lukewarm water and a soft brush. Use a mild detergent if necessary.
- Keep dry: Place your furniture in a place where it gets adequate ventilation and does not remain constantly damp.
- Wood cleaner or vinegar: For a more thorough cleaning, use a special wood cleaner or a mixture of water and vinegar (1:1). Rinse well with water.
- Take advantage of sunlight: Algae grow mainly in shady and humid environments. If possible, make sure your furniture is well exposed to the sun from time to time.
- Apply protective coating: For those who want extra protection, there are special products such as teak sealer or anti-algae treatments that slow down the formation of green deposits.
Conclusion
Green deposit is a natural phenomenon that occurs with any wooden garden furniture left outside. It is not a sign of poor quality, but rather a consequence of environmental factors. Teak is a strong and durable wood that is perfect for outdoor use, but like any material, it needs maintenance. The responsibility for that maintenance lies with the owner. With proper care, your scratching posts and garden furniture will stay looking beautiful and sturdy for years.
